Aliwan Fiesta: A Showcase of Unique Filipino Culture

April 28, 2007 was no ordinary date in the Philippine calendar. It was the day when the 5th Aliwan Fiesta was held in Manila, Philippines.

Aliwan Fiesta is an event organized by the media outfit Manila Broadcasting Corporation. It’s aim is to bring all the festivals of the country in Manila for a one big festival championship. As expected, thousands drove to the streets of Manila, from Quirino Grandstand, down to the Aliw Theater in CCP Complex.

22 Festivals competed for the 1Million Peso Grand Prize and the bragging rights as the Philippines’ Best Festival. Competing delegations all came in from as far as Baguio City in the north, and Maguindanao in the south.

For the first time in the short history of Aliwan Fiesta, Cebu City’s Sinulog Festival represented by the group Lumad Basakanon won the grand title for two straight years now. This year’s first runner up and winner of half a million pesos is Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival. The third place winner is Hilongos, Leyte’s Alikaraw Festival. It was the first time that Alikaraw Festival joined the Aliwan, and yet they were able to land in the top three already.

Various festivals have showcased the unique culture in their respective cities and provinces. The Pasalamat Festival of Pagadian City is a celebration of thanksgiving for a bountiful fish catch. The Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City portrays how an ati, a dark skinned native of Panay dressed up in full regalia to conform to the norms of modernity. The Disposorio Festival of Hagonoy Bulacan retells the unique courtship culture the Tagalogs have, commonly known as the pamamanhikan. the Sinulog Festival tells the story of fisherman who went out to sea but didn’t catch any fish at all. They all prayed to the Santo Niño, and was later blessed with an abundant catch.

A local choreographer who has been joining Dinagyang for so many years and who has been observing the Aliwan contests has offered an explanation why Tribu Ilonganon did not make it again this year. The Dinagyang presentation has become too stylized — it was overly modified and it did not anymore showcase the “usual old ways”. He further added that some Aliwan judges might have found too much counterpoints in the choreography such that the real essence of dance is already lost in the display of skill.

We cannot avoid comparing Dinagyang and Sinulog performances. No one would argue that the Dinagyang repertoire was more difficult to execute than that of Sinulog but we cannot deny that the latter was a happier presentation — it was a jubilation. In fact, Sinulog performance this year was almost the same as their choreography last year. They just enhanced their costumes and props, changed concept from coconut farmers to fisherfolks. But it was still a happy dance!

Dinagyang presentation on the other hand was a display of the dexterity of the performers to move in precision, to shift costumes in the middle of the performance, to catch flying spears, and to jump much higher. Such was a difficult feat that it must warn the audience: Don’t Do This at Home!

In terms of costume, the Cebu color was brighter and more radiant. Their beaded head covers were magnificently and intricately adorned. Their props were easy to carry and their movements were simple but graceful. Their trumpets were loud and their drums rolled soft and fast.

Sinulog presented a joyous celebration, Dinagyang showed a mastery of talent. The former was splendid and made the audience happy, the latter was awesome and kept the spectators excited. It was excitement that made Dinagyang more popular and its performance more impressive.

marvin_kim » May 25th, 2007 at 7:57 pm

i think the dance itself was a story, adding costumes while in the prgress of the dance can already be a metaphor of improvement or development. it doesn’t neccessarily mean that having the dance “too stylized” differed from the “old ways”. the old ways were very boring in a manner that the beat never changes, but of course, there is a distinct beat, there is no innovations because the tendency will be repeat performance from the previous year. just take for example tribu silak. they always had the same story and beat, and even the dances are recycled. it didn’t even surprised when they only won 3rd runner up last dinagyang. also, other tribes had been very different with their past performances, like atub atub. they don’t just perform like that. they wanted to be remarked and remembered as something different from other tribes that’s why they perform differently from each other. and also. a dance could never progress nor be developed if it will not involve innovations. nagiging mediocre na yung ibang tirbes if that happens!
