Pakapin

When purchasing in Davao you can usually get away with asking for a discount when you ask for it (unless it’s in a Mall or Department store.)

But aside from that, you might be able to get away with something else. Pakapin (extra or excess) is what one can also ask from a store. When you ask for this, the seller will usually give you a few more pieces of what you bought or something else in excess in the store.

So in the rare instance that you aren’t given a discount, don’t fret. Just ask for “Pakapin.” In some cases it might be even better than a discount.

The correct phrases would be:

  • Puwede humingi ng pakapin? (respectful)
  • Pakapin naman diyan (jokingly)
  • Puwede pakapin? (short and sweet)

Parang “Paaman” in Ilonggo? freebies asked from vendors/sellers.

This is very common sa mga wet markets or tyangge. but never sa mall.

Yup freebies would be another term for it

I’ve gone so far as to use it with success in local hardware stores. :D

Wow! only now I’ve realized that this has different regional versions.
