Manna from Camiguin: Pastel
Ask anyone in my folks in the office who likes to have a taste of manna from CDO (short for Cagayan De Oro City) or the pride of Camiguin, and everyone agrees it’s the “pastel”. Nope, that’s not one kind of crayons you use when you’re still elementary, and it’s not about the color.
It’s a delicacy from heaven.
Pastel, is a sweet delicacy from the paradise island of Camiguin in Northern Mindanao. These are soft, fragrant and sweet buns filled with the original yema (made mostly of milk, eggs and sugar) or any other flavors that gives this delicacy that makes the food melts in your mouth.
Boxes of 6 are sold at stores in Camiguin towns or at the shopping centers of Cagayan de Oro for about P50 and Boxes for 12 at around P120. It’s a hit pasalubong for anyone craving for sweets and anything Camiguin or CdeO (of course don’t forget the lanzones and the pineapple).

Hi! we’re planning 2 visit the philippines this December and I was wondering if the lanzones will still be in season. We visited again in dec ‘03 but could not find it anywhere in laoag. Could u tell me when is lanzones season? I haven’t tasted it in years. Thanks, Candee

Camiguin lanzones usually start to appear in the markets by 3rd quarter of the year, right after the rainy season. Laguna lanzones, on the other hand, should be available by the time you are here, which is december. happy trip.

Lanzones Festival in Camiguin is every October.
It is unfortunate that CDO hasn\’t developed any pasalubong that is unique to the city. Pastel is from Camiguin, although VJANDEP has a bakeshop in Cagayan de Oro.
I lived in CDO for more than 15 years and I have a house there so I always come home every year. Was there 3X this April and my friends only recommend cheese sticks (too bland; nothing extraordinary), and cashew nuts.
Well, at least aside from Antipolo, may cashew rin pala sa CDO. Get the roasted ones with the skin on. Very nice. Pineapples are from Bukidnon and they ripen easily especially if you travel by sea.
Agt any rate, CDO has its charms. Never mind the pasalubong.

I do agree with Superpasyal. Pastel is not a native delicacy of Cagayan de Oro (CDO). The box says Camiguin Pastel and not CDO Pastel.
However Cagayan de Oro is known for hams. One of the oldest ham makers is SLERS (since 1969). They are now producing chicharon (pork rind) which is becoming a popular pasalubong. You can buy them in the malls. Cashew nuts also are gaining popularity in the city which are harvested in Lumbia district (near the airport).
For more information about Cagayan de Oro, check my tourist website at http://www.cdoguide.com

right, right. pastel is a trademark of Camiguin. indeed, if you go to Cagayan de Oro - you can just think of fresh pineapple as pasalubong…surely you won’t miss the noisy peddlers at the port wailing to sell their pineapples…
sad to say, CDO has one of the noisiest (with all the people barking at you when you go out of the port) and undisciplined drivers (taxi drivers don’t use their meters but charge you instead of a fix rate, and tricycle drivers charge you more than the usual fare…) this alone makes CDO not really that inviting.

yeah, geeten, it’s what i noticed also, as if you are inside a cockpit, kristos doing the “masyada”.. kuyawan ka hinoun mogawas sa pier..as for the taxis in cdo, i can only say that no cities in the phils. can match the car models available for the riding public..mao lang kay naa lang gyud mapahimuslanon sa panahon..
