Yacon: The Healing Rootcrop

These are not yams or sweet potatoes (kamote). These are yacon.
It can be eaten raw. Its crunchiness resembles that of sinkamas; however, Yacon is sweet with a slight tinge of a gingerly taste to it. And although sweet, it doesn’t affect one’s sugar level. No wonder it is popular among those with diabetes and those on a diet. The reason for this is that supposedly, yacon store carbohydrates in the form of insulin and not starch. Its high fiber content is also effective against constipation. There are those who claim that yacon also purifies the blood.
It costs P30 per kilo at the Baguio market. From what I understand, about ten years ago, one could get them in Metro Manila at the weekend markets of Cubao in Quezon City and Magallanes in Makati only. The price then was about a hundred pesos per kilo. Nonetheless, many people purchased yacon for its healing properties.

they are being sold at chinatown binondo as well. i’ve seen them at the tiny wet market at carvajal street, and those tulak-sidewalk-vendors.

we are actually planning to have a research on the tissue culture of yacon. What can you say about its production in the country? Is it stable enough? or do we still need to produce more of this crop in different areas of the country?Ü
Minette » December 6th, 2006 at 12:49 pm
the vegetable stand at the salcedo organic market (saturdays, 7am-2pm) has a pretty steady supply of yacon.
i’ve never tried it before: but you’ve made me reconsider.

Yacon indeed is a very special plant. I used to drink yacon tea for more than a year now and my blood sugar coming from 278 level went down to 176 in just two months.
Now I am drinking it regularly to control my sugar level.

We always buy yacon because its crispy and delicious. However, we find it very expensive. Cost of 1 kilo is P65.00 at SM Hypermart. Can you send me some recipe? will appreciate it very much

We have a lot of diabetics in the family. I would appreciate additional info on where affordable yacon tubers and tea may be bought, preferably in the Quezon City and Ortigas areas. Thanks.
maya » April 20th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
my mom buys it from a market a few blocks away from us. i got pretty curious with it. it indeed tastes like singkamas, a bit sweeter and it’ll probably be better if it’s eaten straight from the fridge.
just pretty expensive though, at P80/kilo. their supply comes from benguet.
btw, the market is called “SUKI”, along Mayon st. near welcome rotonda in quezon city.

I am a researcher based in Ateneo, QC. I did some research on yacon hoping to help yacon farmers in Nueva Vizcaya market their produce. Please let me know if anyone is interested to make some form of purchase agreement with the farmers, I’d be more than willing to facilitate contact with them. My email is jill.campo@gmail.com
FYI for other readers, yacon is being sold in SM hypermarkets at around P50-60/kilo; wholesalers in Divisoria and Balintawak markets sell them for P30-35/kilo. Other retail outlets: Market Market, Taguig (P40-45 offpeak, P60-80 peak season); Rockwell, Makati (P100-200/kilo); Alabang Town Center (P80-100/kilo)
The farmers in Nueva Vizcaya sell their yacon for P12-15/kilo.
