The only collection that goes to the Church is the donation for which a receipt is issued (I had to offer a Mass once, no amount of donation was required -- purely voluntary). The parking lot is owned by the City Government (the picture was undeniably taken outside the Church patio), thus, the parking fee goes to its coffers. As for the items amounting to almost P 400, one may actually refuse them. Just show a little "tapang" in returning them to the vendors. Selling of items in this manner has been opposed by the Cathedral administration and even by the local government. In fact, announcements warning the public regarding this practice are made within Masses from time to time. As for the Minister's "laid out hand", he was probably just gesturing the ceremony was over.

I'm from Antipolo. I'm saddened that you had a very bad experience here, so bad that you described what was supposed to be a holy act as "robbery". However, a little quick thinking (common sense, if you will) would have helped. I, mean, you're not required to buy things against your will and, man, a receipt for whatever transaction is supposed to be kept by the payor, not to be handed out to anyone.

Do visit us again. Between October 2006 and now, things have gone better.

We gave the "donation" to the guy in the parish office who issued us the official receipt . After the minister (in barong tagalog and slacks) was done with the blessing, he laid out his hand and we thought he was asking for the receipt, thinking that we have paid the dues accordingly at the parish office. So we gave it to him! Poor guy! It was only when we reached home when we realized that he might be asking for another "donation". :)
