First of a series.

Introducing the group Lumad Basakanon of Cebu City’s famed Sinulog Festival

Lumad Basakanon of Sinulog Festival

One of the contingents to watch for in the upcoming Aliwan Fiesta is the group Lumad Basakanon of the Sinulog Festival. The Basak, San Nicolas-based troupe has been the Sinulog Festival Free Interpretation Category overall champion for the year 2004, and 2005. And if not because of some technicalities, they could have also won this year’s Free Interpretation overall championship as well.

Lumad Basakanon, clad in their gold costumes, bagged the top prize for the 2006 Sinulog Festival Best in Costume and Best in Musicality special awards. They also won the 2nd prize for the Street Dance Competition.

Lumad Basakanon ofCebu Sinulog Festival

This is the first time that the Cebu City’s Sinulog Festival is fielding a contingent for the Aliwan Fiesta.

Ganda… naman! :D

warren » April 11th, 2006 at 10:26 am

ericd001 » April 11th, 2006 at 2:22 pm

Hello there Warren,

Sa pagkakaalam ko, if Camiguin will join this year’s Aliwan, Dapat dala nila name ng Camiguin festival, and not of Cebu’s. and as far as i know its the festival orgaizing committee who has the last call as to who will represent in the Aliwan.

take the case of Dinagyang (iloilo City). Kahit nag champion na ang Tribu bola bola in 2004, and Tribu Paghidaet for 2003, Tribu Atub-atub pa rin ang pinadala.

tribu Bola-bola ang Tribu Paghidaet all belongs to the (more superior and mas maganda) Open Category.

But the dinagyang foundation has given the rights to represent to Tribu Atub-atub ( winner of the baranggay Category).

i hope this answers your question.

iloilo po ang 2nd sa sinulog 2006 FI category.. nde po nkapasok ang lumad.. hehehehe.. 3rd po ay from iligan, 4th nman from bohol and fifth from eastern samar.. un lang po.. hehehehe..

ericd001 » April 11th, 2006 at 8:14 pm

bobet..

After scouring a lot of forums about the sinulog, a lot of forum members have been saying that Lumad Basakanon (who won the Sinulog Free Interpretation in 2004 and 2005) could have easily won this years FI category again, if not because of the small wheels installed on their carabao props.

Upon checking the Sinulog website, it’s a clear policy that all props should not contain any wheels. Unfortunately, Lumad Basakanon was caught by the judges.

Sayang noh? =)

to eric,

okay!thank you for your clarification and for your rection.

Sa nakakapanood ng sinulog 2006 lam naman talaga nila kung sino talaga yong totoong nanalo… dami nga nag react sa nangyari… yong premyo ng 1rs place sa FI ay na sa Camiguin but in the heart of the competion LUMAD BASAKANON pa rin yong panalo…

warren » April 19th, 2006 at 9:43 am

warren » April 19th, 2006 at 10:01 am

zaldi gwapo » April 19th, 2006 at 6:43 pm

sana sasali ang Camiquin sa aliwan…
para masmaya… at more challenging…

cyrdudes » April 20th, 2006 at 12:32 am

SANA SASALI ANG CAMIGUIN SA ALIWAN… that would be good. but why would they like to represent sinulog?… could it be because sinulog is more festive than their lanzones? isang barkong lanzones ang dalhin nila sa aliwan para i-compete…

ddcage » April 20th, 2006 at 12:37 am

LUMAD BASAKANON facts: hindi sila mga dance troupe members. hindi rin performing arts. they’re simply a talented community. what’s the fuzz about them? TAKOT KAYO ANO???

menggay » April 20th, 2006 at 12:50 am

FYI: lumad basakanon competed and consistently won the sinulog in the previous years but under various commercial names (mohon talisay, sto niño, coca cola, cebu auto glassmaster, pldt, and many more) . it was just recently that barangay basak san nicolas decided to sponsor their own home grown talents.

zaldi gwapo » April 20th, 2006 at 12:52 am

Im from Davao (not from cebu) pero nan doon ako sa grandstand nong sinulog, na ka pag tataka dahil lang sa wheels na disqualified agad yong LUMAD BASAKANON, compare sa ibang contengent parang play ground demonstration na ginagawa nila sa sinulog, pero yong LUMAD BASAKANON powerful dance step, variety of formation, good music hindi katulad sa iba boring kung tingnan… Tnx 4 d power of politics kahit ano pweding gawin…. hehehehe

warren » April 20th, 2006 at 6:32 pm

ambot » April 21st, 2006 at 12:18 am

check ka ZALDY GWAPO ang ginawa ng camiguin this year ay nakakahiya nagsawa naba sila sa kanilang walang kamatayang heavy playground demonstration? kaya kinopya nila ang sayaw ng surigao last year? kahit i review nyo pa ang kanilang routine from the start hanggang last year walang pinag iba pareho takbuhan katulad nlng lahat ng nanalo ngayon sa sinulog 2006. hindi nyo ba naisip na nakuha ng LUMAD BASAKANON ang BEST IN MUSICALITY, BEST IN COSTUME, at 2nd place sa street dancing category at tapos hindi nakapasok sa top five? paano nagyari yon? alam nyo rin ba na 4 out of 6 sa mga judges ay perfect score ang binigay nila sa LUMAD BASAKANON? kahit kumuha pa kaayu ng copy mula sa SKY CABLE kng may alamkayo sa mga elements of dances don nyo makikita ang deperensya. kahit elements of surprise walang nakakagawa non kung di ang LUMAD BASAKANON lng po ang ginawa ng camiguin, samar, bohol at iligan ay parehong playground demonstration kahit sa beat minsn nyo lang maririnig ang sinulog beat try nyo panoorin ang movie na DRUMLINE don nyo maririnig kng paano kinopya ng camiguin, iligan ang beat. yong PASI ilo ilo nmn pwede ba yong ang lahat ng dancers ay reyna lahat sila may dalang sto niño? anong palagay nila sa niño props? nasa guidelines din yon. kaya huwag kayong magmayabang kng wala kayong alam ok? kaya bati na tayong lahat magkaibigan tau. kita kits tayong lahat don sa aliwan fiesta. yah warren u know ang camuign ba ang pinagyayabang mo? ha hindi moba alam na ang lumadbasakanon noong 2004 na champion sila, sinaway ng camiguin ang dance step ng LUMADABASAKANON, pinag sabihan panila na ang pangit ng costume at yung dance step nila.sana tanggapin monalang yung lugar nyo hindi nakasali sa aliwan dahil wala kanang magagawa (warren)…. kung gusto mo masali ang lugar nyo muchbetter to LUMADBASAKANON kasi they want to tompete again. gusto ng LUMADBASAKAON na makita ang whole dance step ng camiguin wew.. kung mang yari yun wow ang saya noh? para makita sa lahat na kung sino talaga ang masbagay sa aliwan…… diba warren? hope to ur place na makasali sila sa aliwan para ang LUMADBASAKANON will wait ur place to come in the aliwan fiestival? kitakits lang tayo…..

ZALDY GWAPO » April 21st, 2006 at 9:46 am

to ambot:
parang may mis understanding ah….
LUMAD BASAKANON AND CADENCE DBC GOODLUCK SA ALIWAN….

TONZ » April 27th, 2006 at 8:21 pm

ang nangyari sa sinulog 2006 is really a big case kac the rules told that no one should use big props or props with wheels.ang LUMAD BASAKANON meron non at akala ko nga din sila mananalo. we heard that the instrumentalists were from Iloilo who also plays good samba music. Me and my friends are really fanatics of streetdancing competitions and we also represent our city of Iligan even di kami nagtrain for the city’s contingent. And Camiguin is a good contingent to win the Sinulog with the expense of LUMAD BASAKANON’S disqualification. Di nga kami bilib masyado sa Iligan city ksi magulo ang choreography ng mga dancers….and yet we still support them.

warren » April 28th, 2006 at 11:08 am

nice01student » April 28th, 2006 at 11:13 am

Tsaka sino nga ba yung winner last year???

glenford c. labial » May 7th, 2006 at 8:51 pm

my felicitations to Lumad Basaknon for winning Aliwan Festival 2006! They truly deserve the title. I am very much proud to tell everyone that I am from Region 10 (the Northern Mindanao)and most of the contingents coming from my region excell in Sinulog Festival in Cebu City. To name a few: Camiguin Island, Ozamiz City, Iligan City, Tangub City, Gingoog and some won when they were still part of Northern Mindanao Region (now CARAGA)to name: Surigao City, Placer, Surigao Norte, Butuan City, Agusan del Sur among others. The biggest challenge for us Northern Mindanaons is to partake in the most coveted ALIWAN FESTIVAL in Manila and prove that we can also do what they had done. To TANGUB CITY who had been consistently reaping millions (not to mention this sorry) and the victorious moments you had given to our region….please join next year and like LUMAD BASAKNON of Cebu City, grab the crown! I believe in Tangub City’s performance. I know on the other hand that SINULOG FESTIVAL of Cebu City played the strongest foundation for you guys! I will be expecting for your entry next year….that goes the same to the island of Camiguin…I am very of my friends RANDEL, GONGGONG, EDWIN and VAL LOZADA who had constantly maintained the glory of Camiguin in the Sinulog Festival that they had been in the TOP 5 each year the said festival is staged. TSADA CAMIGUIN! Go! Go! Go! God blez everyone.

glenford c. labial » May 7th, 2006 at 8:56 pm

Kudos to Aliwan Fiesta! I hope the organizers could modify their fiesta festival name….it sounds like the name of a COMIC MAGAZINE! where I had seen the names ZUMA, DYESEBEL, KUTITAP and the MAGIC BAYONG somthing! Please think of something better that truly refelcts the best cultures that the Islands of the Philippines have….ALIWAN is not so inviting….if it is not because of your grandest presentations of ARTISTAS and MILLIONS of PESOS at stake….i know you would not that buzzy. THINK!

Niño kaya huwag napo tayong magtalo isipin natin na ginawa natin yon hindi dahil sa 1 million kung d to Praise Señor Sto Niño to give thanks to baby Jesus all the blessings that we received.

i can only say CONGRATULATIONS to TRIBU LUMAD BASAKANON!! actually i’m one of the supporter of LUMAD BASAKANON while they performed at QURINO GRANSDTAND last saturday.my cousin and i was really amazed of their fabulous and facinating steps and formations of their dance.it was too entertaining to the crowd.i hope that next aliwan fiesta you still handle the title as “THE BEST FESTIVAL THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY” and your popularity will still shine entire country.kahit hindi pa kayo nagpeperform,i predict that you win the contest.my suggestion is that you should not brag your popularity but you must just proud and humble of yourselves.you also ready yourselves because the time come, you will defeat and you lose your crown or popularity.just ready and accept the defeatness.good luck for the next aliwan fiesta 2007.once again CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Hi guys! Until now I am still waiting for the TANGUB PEOPLE to comment and or react on my suggestion of letting them join the ALIWAN FESTIVAL next year. Guys, you need to move this time and prove again that we excell in Northern Mindanao. I dont think they (SINANDULOY DANCE COMPNAY/TROUPE) had joined in Aliwan eversince. To their organizing committee…please have a brain storm regarding on my thrown challenge. Kaya nyo yan people! Kamo pah! Dba you are SINULOG FESTIVAL’s PRIDE? You can easily convert your SINULOG-BASED to FREE INTERPRETATION which you had been winning in the past SINULOG Years. SINANDULOY WAKE UP! JOIN and PROVE that you are the BEST in ALIWAN and the most unbeatable of all the festivals! Again to the LUMAD BASAKNON…You are the best! and I truly appreciate your efforts in proving that you vested every existing single festival in our archipelago. From your costumes….to the beats and to the total musical justification….everything is precised! I loved it eversince you had appeared in the Sinulog scenery! More power and VIVA! PIT SENYOR! VIVA! VIVA CEBU! VIVA!

Thank you so much nice01student that you supported our group, likewise for the appreciation that you gave with regards to our performance.

In behalf of Lumad basakanon, we really do appreciate your suggestions. We humbly take it us our guide, however glory and defeats are already part in us. It was already installed in our hearts and minds….. We will just try again if there are groups who will take our crown for we did it last Sinulog 2006. … Once again, thank you so much nice01student… ;)

Yeah!, Tribu Sinanduloy are one of the best performers during the Sinulog Festival. They prove it for how so many years for they have a high caliber choreographer(s), music director(Eric), and performers. I know how supportive their government in Tangub City.

Kudos!!! to all of u!

TRO to ask Council to declare Lumad Basakanon as the City’s official Dance Troupe
Date Posted : 04/19/2006
Mayor Tomas Osmeña will endorse to City Council the passing of a resolution declaring the Lumad Basakanon of Barangay Basak as the Official Dance Troupe of Cebu City.

Osmeña said the Lumad Basakanon will represent Cebu City in all Cultural Events nationwide to portray the Sinulog Festival.

For the past 15 years, Lumad Basakanon has bagged several championship titles in the Sinulog Mardi Gras. When it first joined in 1991, Lumad Basakanon won the 1st prize for the Mardi Gras Barangay Division.

In 2005, the group was adjudged as the Grand Champion in the Sinulog Mardi Gras Free Interpretation Category. They also bagged the Best in Costume and Best in Musicality Awards. The group won also won in other Festivals in the neighboring towns and cities.

Lumad Basakanon never ceased to showcase their unique, spectacular and exciting performances which spectators look forward every Sinulog.

Composed mostly of High School students and out-of-school youth in the barangay, the Lumad Basakanon continues to soar high in the area of cultural presentation. Through the years, talents were discovered. Most importantly, the group served as an avenue for young people to engage in activities which proved effective in keeping them off drugs and other vices.

Just recently, it has come to the knowledge of the Mayor that Lumad Basakanon was invited to join the Aliwan Festival in Manila this April 27-29. The group will be the official representative of Region VII to compete with other groups in the different regions for the Festival contest.

Indeed the Lumad Basakanon not only contributed so much in promotion of Sinulog Festival

to all mga maka sinulog… sa totoo lang po, hindi po hambog ang iloilo.. it’s what they so call labeling lang naman kasi di ma accept ng mga ibang tao jan na MOST OF THE BEST CHOREOGRAPHERS IN THE PHILIPPINES CAME FROM ILOILO.. IT IS NO QUESTION WHEN LAST YEAR ALIWAN 2005, ILOILO BAGGED THE THREE TOP PLACES NAMELY, PINTADOS DE PASSI CHAMPION, TRIBU KAHILWAYAN 1ST RUNNER UP, AND TRIBU SILAK, 2ND RUNNER UP NOW AGAIN, THIS YEAR, ILOILO STILL MADE IT TO THE TOP THREE. AND TAKE NOTE THIS YEAR ALIWAN 2006, LAHAT NG ENTRIES NG ILOILO MADE IT TO THE TOP 10.. HINDI LANG TALAGA MAIPAGKAKAILA NA TALAGANG MAGALING MAG CHOREOGRAPH ANG MGA ILONGGOS. AT SYEMPRE, HINDI PO NAWAWALA ANG PULITIKA SA MGA GANYANG CONTEST.. BUT.. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT.. IM AN ILONGGO, I LOVE DINAGYANG AND KASADYAHAN, IM A DEVOTEE OF SR. STO. NINO.
CONGRATULATIONS SA LAHAT NG ENTRIES FROM ILOILO.. THEY ALL DESERVE IT.. ISA LANG NAMAN JAN HINDI.. BATU BATU SA LANGIT TAMAAN WAG MAGALIT..

Zaldy Gwapo » June 14th, 2006 at 10:46 am

marvin kim » June 18th, 2006 at 11:45 am

oi zaldy, kung di mo lang talaga matanggap ang katotohanan, magdusa ka.. basta ang alam ko, magagaling kami… well rounded kasi kami.. hahahahaha!! di tulad nyo, paulit ulit lang.. kami, we are improving our choreography.. baket? kaya nyo bang umakyat sa kawayan at sumayaw? di nyo kayang gawin yun.. kami lang may kaya nun… pasalamat ka lang at kulang sa budget ang mga tribes namin kung hindi.. bah… alam na namin kung ano ang mangyayari pag nagkataon.. hahahahaha!! sa music nga, di nyo kayang gumawa using kawayan eh, umaasa lang kayo sa gongs at trumpets at what you call that lined gongs?? hhmmm.. sa pagkakaalam ko kasi is its a muslim instrument eh.. di tulad namin, original lahat ng instruments.. watch out for tultugan festival.. kaya nyo ba yun? kaya nyo ba ang kahilawayan? hah!! magdusa ka!! tingnan natin next year… hindi nyo pa nakikita ang tribu bola-bola (naka perform na ito outside the country you know!!) at tribu paghidaet ng dinagyang.. you’ll be awed by their performances.. hahahahahahaha!!!

Zaldy Gwapo » June 20th, 2006 at 1:09 pm

angel » June 21st, 2006 at 9:42 pm

marvin kim » June 22nd, 2006 at 11:11 pm

kami… maraming alam na style sa dancing… kaya nga jazz.. dahil and jazz, hindi yun dance.. music lang yun.. hahahahaha!! tingnan nyo pa and dictionary, its a wide array of music.. but it originated in south america, kaya nga jazz music dahil marami ang instruments na ginagamit.. sus.. misconception… dddduuuhhh!!!

music and choreography, panalo na kami… its only a matter of preference, siguro nga, mas preferred ng judges na kayo ang manalao pero sa tingin ng tao, kami ang nanalo.. walang kokontra jan… tanungin mo pa lahat… ahahahahahahahahaha!!!

marvin kim » June 22nd, 2006 at 11:15 pm

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Zaldy Gwapo » June 23rd, 2006 at 9:30 am

Zaldy Gwapo » June 23rd, 2006 at 9:34 am

Marvin get lost Dinagyang cant compete with Sinulogs power… dont wori nxt year sasali uli kami… but do not sigurize under the manggo tree… hehehehehehe… nxt year pa iiyakin nanaman kayo ng LUMAD BASAKANON… ^_^

Zaldy Gwapo » June 23rd, 2006 at 9:36 am

hahahahahahahaha

marvin kim » June 24th, 2006 at 4:46 pm

wow naman… kung sabagay… dapat nga hindi na kinonsider yung lumad basakanon kasi nga, dapat disqualified na yun… technicalities? hindi yun technicalities… that is an error not technicalities.. kung hindi lang naman kayo marunong sumunod sa intructions or guidelines, dont waste your time na lang.. but because of the so called champion for the past 2 sinulog… kinonsider pa.. dapat nga hindi na yun napasama sa top 5 sa sinulog.. wala na sana yun place.. kasi disqualified na dapat.. yung performance nyo, wala lang.. sus… ganun lang ka simple yun.. sige… try natin next year kung kaya nyo pa.. mas maganda na next year kasi mas marami na ang sasali.. well se na lag.. kung talagang kaya nyo pa maging champion ulit.. manood kasi kayo ng dinagyang ng makita nyo hinahanap nyo.. i watched sinulog, tsk… pureo muslm dances lang naman nakikita ko.. walang ingenuity ng choreography.. kaya nyo yan? hahahahahahahahaha!!

marvin kim » June 24th, 2006 at 4:52 pm

kung sinasabi nyo na parang field demo yung dinagyang? what more sa inyo? ni wala ngang ka story-story unlike us, we prepare a story first before we perform so that alam ng tao kung ano yung pine-perform namin unlike you… mas field demo pa nga ang dating eh.. hahahahahaha!! walang kalatuy latoy!! isaksak mo yan sa baga mo!!!

marvin kim » June 24th, 2006 at 4:54 pm

and if you say we should get lost, dapat kayo na yung mag get lost kasi nga sa inyong teritoryo na nga, di nyo pa makuhang manalo.. di pa nga kayo naka grandslam eh ang yabang yabang mo nang magsabing di kaya ng dinagyang ang sinulog? heeellllooouuuueeerrr!! wake up!! baka tulog ka habang sinasabi mo yan… DUH!!

bungaw » June 24th, 2006 at 10:11 pm

bungaw » June 24th, 2006 at 10:28 pm

Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Mark » June 25th, 2006 at 9:20 pm

Yes, I am an Ilonggo and I don’t want to see that we Filipino are bashing each other. Let us respect each other.
Remember, this is a pinoytravelblog, you are supposed to promote the Philippines and your place sa buong mundo kung anong mayroon kayo, hindi dapat mag-awayan at isip talangka. Ano bang pino-promote nyo dito? Awayan at di-pagkakaunawan? Kaya hindi tayo umaasenso eh! Pinapakita nyo kung anong lahi kayo! Gusto nyo bang tawaging bastos?

marvin kim » June 26th, 2006 at 11:00 pm

hellouer!! excuse me po… kami po ang original sa choreography sa kawayan baka kayo ang gaya-gaya… duh!! ahg.. kahit saan tingnan, field demo talaga ang sinulog.. that’s it!! ang pikon talo.. hahaha… ang wrinkles nyo oh! lumalaki na! baka pumutok na mga ugat nyo… hahahahahaahaha!!

Manny » June 27th, 2006 at 10:00 am

Migo Marvin Kim,

Zaldy Gwapo » June 27th, 2006 at 12:15 pm

You know naman whats the biggest festival in the Philippines and thats Sinulog, face the truth… kahit nga yang Dinagyang nyo ay hindi ganun ka sikat… ^_^

Manny » June 27th, 2006 at 2:19 pm

Zaldy,

I don’t agree with you na hindi ito maiintindihan ng taga-ibang bansa or ibang tao ‘yong mga comments. Don’t make also bad impression sa mga Filipino na bumabasa dito. Be more ethical sa mga comments mo. I also read your posts and comments sa ibang sites.

ewe…. bat ganun? pikon na sya talaga… gosh… i never used rude word in my comments as far as im concerned… if i would have done that, this page would be filled by those words im telling you…
and excuse me… paano natalo ang mga contingents namin? bakit? kaya nyo bang magpadala ng contingents na pasok lahat sa top 10? hellouer! wake up… at least, our festivals belong to the top… and pag sinabi mo pa talagang mas sikat ang sinulog sa dinagyang? duh!! try mo kayang mag ask ng foreigner kung anong festival ang gusto nila sa pilipinas… its only either ati-atihan or dinagyang.. and who said that nagsitayuan ang mga to pagkatapos nyo mag perform at nagpalakpakan? syempre di ba kayo ang last performer? o di tumayo sila para umuwi hindi magbigay ng encore sa inyo.. huh… kayo pa yata ang hambog eh… helouer.. speak for youself.. as if malinis na hindi naman… ewe!!
and take note of this… ilang iloilo festivals ba ang pinabalik sa INDEPENDENCDE DAY CELEBRATION? duh… hellouer!! i mean lets face it.. yeah talo kami sa contest lang.. but in the hearts of so many people we are the winner and it cannot be replaced by just a mere 1M pesos… its the audience satisfaction that we want to achieve and the glorification of SR. STO. NINO… secondary lang yang prize, kahit isaksak mo pa yan sa bunganga mo pero kami, alam namin panalo kami sa lahat.. unlike you… you only won on yourselves… BEAT THAT!!

marvin kim » June 30th, 2006 at 10:21 am

and excuse me lang zaldy.. kung mababang uri ako eh ano ka? look at yorslef before you say such things… baka bumalik yan sa iyo… do you know what is bad karma? Bilib talaga ako ni marvin kim…the dinagyang fighter and defender.Dapat may award ka sa ilo-ilo government toh :).I just want to ask if what is the difference of the choreography of dinagyang and ati atihan..Coz the way i see it, it’s the same sound and steps..But in fairness dinagyang tribes has a nice custumes compare to the aklanons..Iyon lang..

Unlike Kalibo where the crowd sometime becomes difficult to separate from the parade through town (more on merry making), onlookers do not participate in the parade in Iloilo.
With the Dinagyang, the emphasis is on competition between the different dance groups in the parade. The dancing is characterized by a frenzied foot-stomping, a drumbeat that can be almost hypnotic, the whirling colors of costumes, and the chanting of dancers.

to ambot:
for your info ambot, wla pa ang drumline movie narinig ko na ang drumbeat ng camiguin at iligan city. and that beat has emerged since early 1990s hindi mo lang alam ang pinagsasabi mo. nakita ko na ang drumline and the beat that they play are cadence beats something like a military SOP beat that you play as a regular beat.

to george rama
dinagyang is more disciplined that ati-atihan that for sure. the music is quite similar in som ways but dinagyang is improving their musicality every year that’s they say we lost in aliwan because of what “they” say musicality. dinagyang used jazz music and they say it was not filipino “daw”. come to think of it, it’s just a term used to described a type of music. although it originated in south america, the beat is still dinagyang. i don’t why they considered it as technicality error pero jazz is just a wide band of music. as you have witnessed the aliwan, the dinagyang tribe used different instruments. hey even used “basok” a bamboo instrument. also they used samba beats but they were all original and some parts are recycled.
ang sa ati-atihan naman, they only focus on merry making. tama yung sinabi ni jack. doon kasi nakakajoin ang crowd sa parade whereas in dinagyang, discipline is strictly imposed. kaya nga palaging best in discipline and dinagyang sa ibang competitions.
also, dinagyang tribes uses concepts on their performance. they think of a theme before they start to choreograph. but as for aliwan kasi, 5 minutes lang a performance kaya hindi mahirap i-compress ang concept pero dito sa iloilo, there is a concept talaga. last year, tribu ilonganon (the representative this year of dinagyang) used the concept of the four elements. (fire, water, air and earth) they only got 2nd runner up but their concept was superb. also this 2006 dinagyang, tribu silak (last year’s representative, won 2nd runner up in aliwan 2005) used the concept of early religion (the worship of idols) as their concept and how christianism evolved and how SR. STO. NINO changed their lives. natalo lang sila kasi medyo magulo yung performance but their concept is really great.

CHEXXXTER » July 11th, 2006 at 12:20 pm

jack » July 11th, 2006 at 2:04 pm

chexxxter,

Ati-atihan is the wildest among Philippine fiestas and considered as the Mother of All Philippine festivals.

Dinagyang was started in 1968. The National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA)has tagged Dinagyang as the “Festival of Excellent Folk Choreography.”

Sinulog was started in 1980, one of the grandest and most colorful festivals in the Philippines.

jack » July 13th, 2006 at 8:48 am

bisaya_ko,

Are you an expert in cultural presentations? I believe you if you are an expert. Let other people judge kung sino ang magaling, medyo bias kung ikaw ang magbigay ng komento sa sarili mo. With regards sa Aliwan results, Dinagyang has already accepted the defeat and why are you keep on bashing with them? There will be another Aliwan festival, prove that your contingent is worth to that crown.

BISAYA_KO » July 13th, 2006 at 9:35 am

jack » July 13th, 2006 at 11:32 am

bisaya_ko,

prove it again para walang masabi. do you think sa mga comments mo ngayon ay isang magandang asal at walang magsasabi na hindi ka bastos? you’re keep on yakking with non-sense.

just prove it again that your contingent is worthy to the crown. naprove na ng dinagyang, sumali sila ng mga ilang taon na sa Aliwan and they were always on the top place (kahit sabihin nating hindi 1st place).

GEORGE RAMA » July 13th, 2006 at 9:40 pm

Salamat Marvin Kim ha, Maybe you can suggest to your organizers to show dinagyang to the whole nation or maybe to the world. What I mean is national television is the key to let others recognize that your festival is such a great one.Studio 23 coverage before was not really good, blurred cameras.. I’m sorry to tell you but the last time I watch dinagyang live that was 2003, I expect something spectacular but it was not..Maybe the grand parade itself needs to improve a lot, in terms of grandstand for the audience or more out of town contingents,it will bring a lot more excitement like what they did in sinulog..Bringing out of town contingents will get some attention to other regions…Passi join last year, won 2nd prize here in Cebu,I think it will stop the rivalry between cities if your festival is open, it will make ilonggos use to the atmosphere, not just wait for the aliwan to happen. I think Ilo-ilo can do it..Thanks and Peace

jack » July 14th, 2006 at 9:05 am

Hi George,

Dinagyang was also participated in Sinulog as a guest performers. I forgot the year kung kailan ‘yon, siguro mga late 90’s ‘yon.
There are alot of improvements ngayon sa Dinagyang specially sa coverage at parade. The dinagyang is actually planning to limit the number of performing tribes to 15 (this will be the best of the bests) para sa mas maayos na parade (during dinagyang proper). Other tribes would be given the opportunity to perform during the Fluvial Procession (this is friday before the Dinagyang highlights).
Siguro if you are an expert maiintidihan mo ‘yon. Hindi lang pala basta mag-choreograph, they are doing some research also.
I am also interested na malaman kung paano kinu-choreograph ang Sinulog.

GEORGE RAMA » July 14th, 2006 at 10:48 am

I think the sinulog foundation also conducted seminars to enhanced the choreography. In terms of the details, i cannot comment on that because im just an ordinary spectator. There are 2 categories, the free interpretation and sinuog based proper..Lumad is competing for FI, together with some out of town contingents like surigao, camiguin before Pasay city of joey marquez Etc..In sinuog base there’s a dancestep to follow and one theme for ritual,it has a strict guidelines..Before, most of the cebu entries, dominating this category but now it’s Tangub of mindanao..It’s a big slap on the face of cebuanos if there is no a single contingent that can compete with these out of towners. Imagine a lowly barangay will compete against a city or municipality sponsored tribe..It’s really a blessing that LUMAD BASAKANON come up with such a great competitiveness..Ilo-ilo tribes and cebu’s lumad have a different paths in going to aliwan..I think ilo-ilo as the perenial champs is really oozing with confident to bag the title again and Lumad is very sentimental in representing cebu. Clashing of egos and pride resulting to these great rivalry..A Classic example of REGIONALISM..

Just want to share this info….

Some of the festivals of Iloilo were already tied up with the NCCA, they are now recognized by their performances.

“Pintados de Pasi” of Passi City, Iloilo for example, the last year champion of Aliwan, they outdo the Dinagyang contingents who were 2nd runner up; the Kahilwayan Tribe of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, who are indemand every Indepence Day celebration at Luneta, they were also the Dinagyang Kasadyahan contest champion, and Aliwan 1st runner up last year. Another festival from Iloilo participated this year Aliwan, the Tribu Manog-gama of Tultugan Festival, Maasin Iloilo, they were recognized by their unique instruments (bamboo instruments) and music; and they were the champion of this year Dinagyang Kasadyahan contest.

There are still alot of festivals in Iloilo with great perfomances and choreography, the Hirinugyaw-Suguidadonay Festival of Calinog, Iloilo; the Salakayan Festival of Miagao, Iloilo (they are also aiming to join the Aliwan Festival), the Binanog Festival of Lambunao, Iloilo; and the Katagman Festival of Oton, Iloilo.

Dinagyang sends different tribes every Aliwan Festival, Tribu Atub-Atub (2003-1st runner up, 2004 - champion); Tribu Silak (2005 - 2nd runner up) and Tribu Ilonganon (2006 - 1st runner up).

There are still alot of Dinagyang tribes with equal or with much greater perfomance than those who joined the Aliwan, Tribu Bola-bola (Dinagyang Hall of Hame and Grand Slam Champion), Tribu San Pedro (most promising tribe, first timer sa Dinagyang), Tribu Paghidaet (was also Dinagyang Champion for several years, nagpapahinga muna sa Ati contest, sumali sa Kasadyahan contest), Tribu Panaad, Tribu Parianon.

Iloilo Province is now recognize as Festival Country because alot of festivals happening around the province, each municipality have their own festival.

Cebu and Iloilo are rich in culture and heritage which we are something to be proud of. I don’t want that we both visayan province bashing with each other but let us share our knowledge since we have the same Sto. Nino to adore and celebrate.

to marvin kim:

the aliwan festival is a showcase of all PHILIPPINE FESTIVALS and NOT a festival of battling festivals. Sana u put in mind that the competition is just second to the idea of putting back our tourism industry to where it should be. I think SINULOG and DINAGYANG are both world renowned kaya lang they differ into the type of festival kasi the Sinulog depicts the historical fact to where the Sto. Niño started in the Philippines and it is in fact in CEBU. DINAGYANG is known for its mimicry of early settlers to the NEGRITOS of PANAY ISLAND which had the ATI ATIHAN and copied by DINAGYANG.
YOUR FESTIVALS ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE MANAGED TO COME TO THE TOP WHERE OTHER FESTIVALS IN THE COUNTRY DIDNT. And besides you cannot compare a certain festival to the other coz FESTIVALS ARE UNIQUE TO ONE ANOTHER. Coz if things are like the same then there is no use of naming festivals with unique names coz they are the same.

TONZ » July 17th, 2006 at 9:25 pm

quoted by marvin kim: “and excuse me lang po… hindi lahat ng dinagyang tribes eh sumusuot ng t back.. depende yun sa costume nyo.. unlike your costumes.. its so ‘muslim’.. eh pang cathlolic pa naman yung sinulog… duh!! ano yan?
kung sinasabi nyo na parang field demo yung dinagyang? what more sa inyo? ni wala ngang ka story-story unlike us, we prepare a story first before we perform so that alam ng tao kung ano yung pine-perform namin unlike you… mas field demo pa nga ang dating eh.. hahahahahaha!! walang kalatuy latoy!! isaksak mo yan sa baga mo!!!

to marvin kim:

Before the Christianity came to the Philippines, we were all Muslims and thats why Muslim type yung costumes ng LUMAD BASAKANON.I am not a Muslim but i hated the quote of one writer in Cebu when KAUSWAGAN, LANAO DEL NORTE joined the SINULOG. He said that they should have not joined SINULOG coz it is not a Muslim Festival. I mean i am embarrased to ignorance of the people who quote words like this coz they dont even know what they are talking about. Even if the costume or the dancer is Muslim, he can still join any festival kasi they depict the tradition that a tribe is representing. A MUSLIM TRIBE is called a MARANAO TRIBE and it is a real tribal minority AND NOT JUST A FABRICATED TRIBE LIKE WHAT DINAGYANG TRIBES ARE MADE OF. A Maranao tribe has its own cultural foundations that dates back to Centuries even before Christianity came in the Philippines. I hope before people comment on issues they should know what they are talking about in the first place coz they only make confusion on readers who are not familiar with the topic.

mike » July 17th, 2006 at 11:13 pm

WHILE many are saying that Dinagyang is not based on history, the fact is, it is actually the summation of the Panayanon’s way of life. The Dinagyang Festival, even before it got its name, has been depicting in many ways the history of Panay from the 15th to the 17th century and through the 300 yaers that followed.

The presentations, the street pageants, the rhythms show the aetas in their primitive culture, surviving on hunting and fishing. The barter of Panay, the culture of the Datus and their tribes are presented in colorful and graceful renactments. Lokewise are the tribal wars and peace pacts afterwards, skillfully and conscientiously choreographed creating a sense of appreciation and pride among the spectators, for the innate courage and candidness of the early Filipinos. The custom and tradition of offering animals, fruits, tools, utensils and indigenous wealth in many rituals of the seasons reflect this kind of spirituality of the Filipinos which can be incomparable. Their beliefs in spirits, in their own versions of gods and goddesses through objects in nature are precludes to greater Filipino religiosity on which Spain superimposed the stronger influenced of Catholicism.

The Panayanons, whatever their profession or status in life, wherever they maybe in the world today, love their history. Whether they are articulate it openly or not, they fall back on their sense of history as they look forward for development.

Year after year, people see almost the same pageantry, the same choreography and hear the same rhythm yet they do not get tired watching the tribes perform. Perhaps though these they see a glimpse of their roots and from there draw strength to live on.

For the last 37 years, the Dinagyang Festival has continuously captured the attention, if not necessarily the “affection” of both Ilonggos and non-Ilonggos alike. It has become a yearly rituals to the Pnanyanons where they get the chance to showcase even just the fragments of what they can cull out of their history.

Theirs may not be a deeper sense of identification but there is always some kind of affiliation, perhaps, a sense of gratitude that through the Dinagyang Festival, they are afforded moments to look back, as they walk through the dizzying fast lane post modern times.

The Dinagyang Festival gradually making its own history through these years, while trying at all times to recapture the history on which it has anchored its existence.

mike » July 18th, 2006 at 7:51 am

tonz,

YES, you are right that we should know what we are talking about before we make our comments and giving our opinion.

Hope that the above article will also answer your allegation about fabricated tribes of Dinagyang.

Peace to you, bro!!!

tonz » July 19th, 2006 at 2:26 pm

well done mike,

im also keen on the fact that the aetas are living to the simplest state of living perhaps not that primitive. but their way of celebrating their feast is not the way DINAGYANG CONTINGENTS DO coz what the DINAGYANG CONTINGENTS DO are very much over and not the way a natural Aeta or NEGRITO TRIBE DOES. The ORIGINAL ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL has the natural AETA or NEGRITO TRIBAL movement as emphasized until now. I think the emphasis on the DINAGYANG FESTIVAL is the way the AETAS skin color is toned and to other aspects like choreography i can see that celebration as POP/JAZZ CULTURE in nature and not FILIPINO. There are also tribal minorities in MINDORO jst like the AETAS and u can really see in their festival that they DONT DANCE TO THE BEAT OF THE SAMBA which comes from BRAZIL they just dance to their own primitive beats. Maybe the emphasis is anchored to the basis of pop culture to spur spectators from the crowd.
I dont see that much the way of living or doing their domesctic way of living is much emphasized on the ALIWAN CONTINGENT. In those ways, i can see the tribes of BUKIDNON still dancing the genuine dance that the HINGAONONS DANCE many centuries ago and the dancers themselves are GENUINE HIGAONON TRIBE and in fact they join ALIWAN. One cultural anthropologist in Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology said that the BUKIDNON-HIGAONON TRIBE is the most preserved cultural antiquity aside from the MARANAOS OF LANAO, BLAANS and T’BOLIS of COTABATO, the SUBANENS of ZAMBOANGA PENINSULA. Their rituals are very much genuinely native and not changed to the present time. Maybe coining through the movements of the tribal locality may do but the essence of native ancestry is lost. If you may ask a cultural anthropogist and not a choreographer, there is very much distinction in NATIVE CULTURE and POP/JAZZ CULTURE. COZ IF U PUT MORE EMPHASIS ON THE LATTER, THE ESSENCE OF NATURALITY AND NATIVENESS IS LOST.

tonz » July 19th, 2006 at 2:38 pm

AND ANOTHER THING MIKE,

If you say Panayanons, you cant say that they are the native Panayanons coz if you say the first than the latter anybody can be a Panayanon if he lives in Panay for six months but a native or Lumad Panayanon is very much emphasized as a real or local Panayanon. Coz much of the people living in every place in the Philippines are all migrants from other places so anybody can say im a Panayanon or Cebuano but a Lumad Panayanon or Lumad Cebuano is very much fit to it. NOBODY WILL EVER SAVOR OR APPRECIATE ON HIS OWN CULTURE BUT A LUMAD OR NATIVE OF THE PLACE WHERE HE LIVES.

tonz,

That’s your opinion and I respect that.

Dinagyang have greatly benefited by coordinating with the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) that provided workshops for choreographers, costume designers and set designers. So, I don’t think that Dinagyang has lost its main theme.
We also know what are the works of NCCA. One of there mandates is to encourage artistic creation within a climate of artistic freedom.
We are also bound to have evolution on our festivals with consultations from experts (specifically the NCCA) and not neglecting the true purpose of our festival.

actually you are quite right that dinagyang hs lost its touch of tradition… althought dinagyang doesnt have a trade nark dance, the story never changes its focus on religion. SR. STO NINO is always the center of attraction. Another thing is that “DINAGYANG” means celebration that’s why the tribal presentation always focuses on thanking and praising SR. STO. NINO.

actually, kung sa aliwan na nagpeperform ang dinagyang, wala na story yan kasi its only a 5 min presentatation… ang ginagawa na lang ng choreographer jan is focus na lang everything on SR. STO. NINO i also remembered the interview to the choreographer of tribu atub atub (aliwan champion 2004, 1st runner up 2003) and he said that it was very difficult that he made a little story for their performance during 2004 but he had taken the risk and it did quite go well but i dont know with tribu ilonganon but as far as im concerned, they deviated from the normal music to avoid recycling music of other tribes. it always happen kasi na magkakapareho yung music ng mga tribes dito because nagsi-stick pa rin sila sa dinagyang beats but to break monotony, other tribes try to differentiate their music to have variety and style.. pero nung nanalo yung atub atub kasi last 2004 ay may samaba beats din sa ginamit sa music nila.. it even came from the mouth of their musical director.. hehehehe!!
yung maganda na concept this year sa dinagyang was from tribu silak (aliwan 2005, 2nd runner up) where they tried to tell the story of early religion until the arrival of Christianity in Iloilo. natalo sila kasi may isang judge na nagbigay ng score ne mababa and their rank on that judge was 13 out of 20. dun sila natalo. pero naka appeal na sila and that judgews repremanded and banned na siya na mag judge ulit sa dinagyang. that is in perpetuity dahil wala syang naging basehan para pabagsakin ang score ng tribu silak. hehehe!!

Wala namang point kung sino ang Mother of All Festivals or What kind of choreography they do, ang importante is that they promote tourism for the country. Ang problema kasi ninyo is that you that have that sense of unity and understanding. And u dont accept some point of other people and also u dont accept defeat. And much to that a festival winner is not about who won this festival and that other but the thing is that winner has emerged the top for that present time.

magaling talga ang mga taga tangub city coz they have a very good pool of instrumentalists and choreographers. also tangub city officials specially the city mayor and the firstlady are very supportive of all the endeavors of TRIBU SINANDULOY which they created as a dance troupe and scholarship foundation…

tonz » August 13th, 2006 at 9:16 pm

emotional outsbursts are natural but to admit ones failure nagagawa ko naman yon and i dont fight with people kung talunan kami when i was still a dancer in a tribal group before. Pero when it comes to CHEERDANCE which our group also specializes, galit ako kasi niluluto yung outcome. we can sense na kami talaga best kasi our routine is really patterned from the US based cheerdance champions and the lifts are really perfect…we have good mixes and also varsity costumes are great…pero yun nga niluluto coz the venue is of a particular school who also joins the cheerdance competition.

Jess » August 25th, 2006 at 11:12 am

Paano mo masabi na Sinulog ang Mother of all Festivals?

Just for your info, here are the big 3 festivals of our country :

Ati-atihan is the wildest among Philippine fiestas and considered as the Mother of All Philippine festivals. Ati-atihan ang pinakaunang festival sa Pilipinas kaya tinaguriang “Mother of All Philippine Festivals”.

Dinagyang was started in 1968. The National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA)has tagged Dinagyang as the “Festival of Excellent Folk Choreography.”

Sinulog was started in 1980, one of the grandest and most colorful festivals in the Philippines.

cebuano » August 27th, 2006 at 12:13 am

SINULOG THE GRANDEST AND THE MOST COLORFUL FESTIVAL IN THE PHILIPPINES kaya tinawag na MOTHER OF ALL FESTIVALS period. ang atiatihan walang ginawa kng di ang umindak lang tapos ang dinagyang ay wala lang.

Jess » August 28th, 2006 at 8:21 am

Hindi naman pinagkakaila na ang Sinulog is one of the grandest and most colorful festivals in the Philippines. And I would like also to say that Dinagyang also a colorful festival with great choreography and presentation.

Mabuhay ang mga Fiesta ng Filipino!!!

sEan » January 22nd, 2007 at 5:07 am

I’ve been reading through the posts here and i can’t believe how you guys can just easily ridicule Camiguin contingent just because Lumad Basakanon got a deduction and the win was instead given to Camiguin.

What’s the use of coming out with a criteria and guidelines if it’s not to be followed? With all due respect to Lumad Basakanon, i know you guys are real good coz i’ve been here in Cebu for close to 10 years already and i’ve seen a lot of amazing performances from you guys. But can’t we just leave this one and move on? A win is a win and a loss is a loss.

To zaldi gwapo, anong politics ba sinasabi mo? If Lumad Basakanon still won that year despite the fact they they violated something in the guidelines, diba un ang may halong politika?

To tasyo, i have to agree with you. Camiguin is not as rich as your Cebu (good for you guys). But this i want to tell you. Camiguin is spending more than a million every year just to join the Sinulog event. Magkano ba premyo kung mag champion? If i’m not mistaken, P500,000 lang diba? Kaya lugi pa rin kami. But despite that, we’re still sending out a contingent every year and this is a big help in keeping the Sinulog event alive. Can you guys imagine how it would be if there are no out-of-town contingents joining the Sinulog? Are you guys expecting na ganun pa rin kadami ang pupunta ng Cebu pag walang out-of-town contingents?

Let’s take this year’s Sinulog as an example. From last year’s 10 out-of-town contingents, only six joined this year. And i’m expecting that number to lessen come next year. Reasons? As stated above, lugi ang gobyerno ng mga out of towners na yan kasi kahit manalo, di pa rin kasya ang premyo.

But still, i believe Camiguin will remain committed in sending a contingent every year. So this i have to say, how dare you guys laugh at us. Pag ganyan ang ugali ninyo, wala nang sasali na out-of-town contingents in the years to come. Itaga nyo yan sa bato!!!

proud_cebuana » January 22nd, 2007 at 3:56 pm

Congratulations Cebu for the success of the SINULOG 2007…

To SEAN -> i agree with you.the participation of out of town contingents in Sinulog helps a lot.It simply shows that Cebu is a grand festival that even out-of-town contingents join the celebration..it’s so sad to know that oonly a few joined the parade this year.

To ZALDY/(some)LUMAD BASAKANON/CADENCE members ->whoever you maybe, stop acting like uneducated people.”ayaw ninyo ipakita inyong mga tambay nga batasan diri sa blog”…i’ve been reading the posts and I felt embarassed of your comments..You’ve been so immature with your posts. You don’t have decency.Well, it guess it’s understandable…as what some of your members say “tambay” ra mo..but at least you know how to respect other festivities…Frankly speaking, “puol na kaayo inyong steps ug music..sige lang balik2x..”and to CADENCE, don’t brag too much, AGM is still the best..if not for Lumad basakanon, “asa man mo puniton??”….

well, to all the Sinulog supporters, thank you and VIVA SEÑOR STO.NIÑO! :)

sEan » January 22nd, 2007 at 11:01 pm

Thanks, proud_cebuana! :) Anyway, i’ve read in the newspaper about what mayor Tommy said. The sinulog event for 2008 will be repackaged to encourage the out of towners to join the event again. I hope it will be more of a success come 2008 and hope to see more out-of-town contingents. But overall, i say the celebration this year was still a success. Congrats Cebu!!

Congratulations also to Lumad Basaknon for grabbing the title for 2007.

Kudos also to Camiguin for a good perfomance. We will be back next year.

VIVA PIT SEñOR EVERYONE! PEACE ! :)

facts:
- every contingent has their own identity.. sinulog is lanzones’ brother festival.. (FYI: unang na-establish ang lanzones festival)
- camiguin doesn’t have its residential choreographer, so everytime they join any competition a new flavor comes out depending on the trainer’s taste.. our entry to the sinulog 06 was not an imitation of surigao’s routine, etc.. it was only that Randel Ruaya - surigao’s choreographer - used the same seasoning to camiguin’s piece in sinulog 06’s bout because he was appointed to train the contingent..
- trying to configure out the in-depth.. we always join the free interpretation category.. so don’t be surprised if we - and also the other contingents - are performing out different concepts.. in the case of ethnicity to the props, costumes, and steps, always remember that we are talking about CREATIVITY.. it is still considerable to insert other dance genres as long as the basic/fundamental trademark of the based ethnic group is preserved.. we are trying everything to show that we are all unique and distinct from each other, right..? so why fuzz..? besides, we all came not only to compete but to showcase our sincere gratitude to God for the many blessings He has been giving us.. It’s not between us in this case.. it’s between me and my God..!
- economically, the province has to be aware that there are things that are need to be prioritized than joining the aliwan festival for the mean time.. after all of nature’s rage during typhoons, and the inadequacy of financial status in some way, are to be considered.. so, don’t blame our financial standerd because in the first place, we are only an island still struggling to cope with the society’s demands.. and i am assuring you of a real dance floor battle by the time circumstance would allow us to compete in Aliwan..
DAGHANG SALAMAT.. AGSADJA KIRAW.. MABUHAY..

The winning tribes in this year’s Dinagyang competition Tribu Ilonganon of Jalandoni Memorial National High School and Tribu Kahilwayan of the Sta. Barbara National Comprehensive High School are all set for the Aliwan Fiesta in Manila.

They are going to have a send off party this Friiday at Iloilo Freedom Grandstand. The street leading to the grandstand will be closed for the said send off party.

Iloilo will also field a giant float made of indigenous materials carrying a “big warrior” in full Dinagyang costume of the native Atis during Aliwan Fiesta.

Cara Jeanne Sullano will vie for the Reyna ng Aliwan Beauty Contest.

Dinagyang souvenir items, like Dagoy key chains, Ilonggo delicacies, T-shirts and others, will be exhibited for sale at the Aliwan Bazaar.

Hala Bira Iloilo!

walter » April 22nd, 2007 at 11:23 am

we happened to be on our vacation during the ALIWAN 2006 and we witnessed the many great talents of the Philippine Fiestas! Filipinos really have something to give and to show in the arts…

Coming from a good ground and enough jades on the arts, I love the Dinagyang Group’s total factors. They should keep themselves up. I thought they should have gotten the top award, by a lot!

@lovely_gay: Both Marvin and Walter just want to cheer for the Dinagyang, never did they mention about “sa mga taga Cebu”. So I suggest you keep your comment to yourself and look at the mirror first.

marvin_kim » April 25th, 2007 at 9:35 pm

lovely_gay:

sino kaya paulit ulit ang choreography?!? i saw your performance on youtube darling and i swear some of your dances were recylced from your aliwan 2006 performance! want me to enumerate them?!? even the time lapse of the dance part!

don’t fret darling, you started it first! but again, i would state this in a constructive manner… i like the way lumad occupies the performance area but puro na lang kasi takobuhan ng takbuhan, sayang yung time na nako consume ng pagtakbo… sa dance na lang sana yun… pwede din naman mag change formation kahit di tumatakbo di ba?!? and also, sa music… di ba ethnic ang sinulog?!? bakit may wind instruments na?!? during ancient times hindi pa na-i introduce and wind instruments di ba? the trumpets… that what i mean… okey lang yung flute pero dapat kawayan sya kasi native ang dating… okey rin yung drums…

Kalilangan Festival » April 27th, 2007 at 2:49 pm

wala me masabi sa performance ng lumad basakanon last aliwan festival. But we do hope na sana yung ibang mga contigents eh… mas galingan pa nila. Like yung Festival namin. I hope yung Kalilangan Festival eh.. makilala din di lang dito sa south cotabato but pati narin sa whole Philippines and i think… I really believe that Generals could make its way to the top of this contest. They have been to COtabato last 1st week op april to do their preparations and also to join the Kuyog Festival of the ARMM regions. The result they won the contest and natalo din nila yung isa sa mga contigents na kasali sa aliwan festival. I hope magawa din nilang manalo in this so called The Mother Of All Festival. Good Luck General’s…….. Kaya nyo yan… Huwag nyo sanang sayangin mga sakripisyo nyo… DO your Best and LEt the judges deside the rest… wahahahahha

LEONIDAS » May 19th, 2007 at 12:56 am

kawawa pala tong DINAGYANG supported by UN ibig sabihin nito poor tong festival na to? kailangan niyo ba ng donation? pwede akong mag donate wak lang kayong mahiya ok…

marvin_kim » May 24th, 2007 at 11:14 pm

leonidas, just shut up if you don’t know the real story behind it! it doesn’t mean that if it’s “supported” means being supported “financially” if that is what you are trying to imply! what it meant is that, THE UNITED NATIONS SUPPORTS DINAGYANG FOR ITS PURPOSE IN PROMOTING ITS MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS ESPECIALLY IN THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES LIKE THE PHILIPPINES! SO, KAYA BA NG FESTIVAL NYO YAN?!? YOU CAN’T EVEN SURVIVE ON YOUR OWN! AT LEAST, WE ARE BEING SUPPORTED BY AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF COUNTRIES AND BEING RECOGNIZED AS THE BEST TOURISM EVENT IN THE PHILIPPINES! AND BEING PRESENTED BEFORE A CROWD OF PEOPLE WITH DIFFERENT NATIONALTIES.

if i were you, you better shut your mouth, and read the stories between the lines before you even react with your unthought of comments. which are delivered ill mannered! gosh! is this the people that dance for a religious event?!? how ignorant and how INSECURE!!

INSECURE!! why bother to pick on us if you won the top prize already?!? tsk tsk tsk! the truth behind that is simplY this:

YOU’RE JUST INSECURE THAT PEOPLE DON’T APPRECIATE YOUR PERFORMANCE! UNLIKE OURS! AT LEAST, DINAGYANG HAD PERFORMED SEVERAL TIMES ALREADY, RIGHT AFTER ALIWAN! AND HAVE RESERVATIONS ALREADY TO PERFORM ON OTHER PROVINCES IN THE PHILIPPINES! AND YOU?!? YOU LAGGED BEHIND DUDE! GET OVER IT! YOU LOOK NOT ONLY IGNORANT BUT STUPID HERE! IN THE REAL SENSE OF THE WORDS!
