Waterfun at Lake Caliraya, Laguna

Lake Caliraya is a man made lake, I think originally made by the Americans as a water reservoir to create electric power. Now it is a recreation area with couple of private homes around the lake and a resort: Caliraya Recreation Center Resort. We went there three years ago with some speed boat riding, masaya.

To go to the resort you have to park your car along the shore and then the resort is a short boat ride from the shore [the parking area]. When we got to the other side of the lake at the resort side. It’s a nice walk to the garden, a well manicured lawn then you pass by some of the recreation facilities like the basketball court, some cottages and then there’s some horseback riding at the resort.

From Quezon City to Batangas in a Breezy

One Saturday just last month, a supposed-to-be 2-hour drive to Batangas turned out to be one of the worst driving experience of my life. I live in a Quezon City apartment near UP and have a job in Eastwood, and every week I go home to Batangas and my family. There wasn’t much fuzz with that a year ago when SLEX was still not under “renovation,” but now, trying to go home at the same time of day as I did before makes me wish for the nth time I didn’t have to work in the city–but of course, I have to. So after that Saturday wherein I was caught up in traffic for 6 hours, I told myself something needs to be done and I just have to modify my travel habits to cope up with the current road situation. Now, after four weeks of experimentation, I might have just found my answers. For those people who have the same route(or at least parts of it) as I do and who want to retain that pleasant driving experience they had right after learning how to drive and before discovering that the city is not the race track we imagine it to be: read on.

Manila Chinese Cemetery

Just a few weeks ago, I played the male version of Lara Croft as the Tomb Raider. No, I wasn’t shooting another movie version. But I was doing the real thing. We scoured all the nook and cranny of the Manila Chinese Cemetery for a treasure trove of unsual facts and some more lessons in Architecture 101. There are actually a lot of unusual tombs and mausoleums there. Full of unique storypieces. Remember that each and every tomb and mausoleum has its own story to tell. We might run out of space if we will enumerate it here. Anyway, here are some of the structures that really caught my fancy:

A Chinese Pagoda. It’s not really a mausoleum, but more of a waiting shed or something.

A Drop of Milk in Manila

Just a few blocks away from the Far Eastern University is another architectural masterpiece. A masterpiece that was almost forgotten by time. A treasure that could have been torn down to pieces. But heritage conservationists took a bold action before time finally eats this building into dust. Then in the 2002, 859 Lepanto Street (now S. H. Loyola) Manila never looked the same again.

Awesome Avilon Zoo in Montalban

Photos Avilon Zoo Montalban - owl - nice eye shadow huh I went to Avilon Zoo in Montalban. It’s awesome! I felt so at home with my animal relatives, I didn’t want to go back to the city!

I can compare Avilon Zoo to Sydney Aquarium and Featherdale Wildlife Park in Australia, compare it to Underwater World in Singapore. I can say Avilon Zoo is a world-class zoo and the best in the Philippines! (if you know of a better one in the Philippines, do share!)

Avilon is a 7.5 hectare zoo that hosts hundreds of exotic animals in a clean environment that kids and adults will enjoy.

They have a wide collection of exotic animals from big cats (leopards, pumas, lions, tigers), big fish (huuuuge ARAPAIMAS!), nocturnal animals, primates, birds (ostriches, Kalaw, eagles), tapirs, hyenas, kangaroos (soooo small, the smallest in the world, I hear) and animals endemic to the Philippines (Palawan mouse deer, bearcat (?), tarsier and others). A Journey to an Art Deco Complex

In every corner you look, there are squares, triangles, straight lines, curves, and all sorts of geometric pattern that you can think of. No, I didn’t enroll myself in Geometry 101 again. Last week I found myself inside the Philippines’ largest Art Deco complex: the Far Eastern University along Morayta Street in Manila.

Shroud of Turin Exhibit Opens in SM Pampanga

Shroud of TurinSan Fernando, Pampanga is set to be the first of four Philippine cities to host the upcoming Shroud of Turin exhibit. After enlightening New Zealand, Shroud Exhibits International, Inc. presents the Philippine Exhibition of The Mystery of the Shroud of Turin, opening on July 20 at SM Pampanga.

Revered for hundreds of years as the burial shroud of Jesus Christ, the Shroud of Turin is locked away in a cathedral in Italy, publicly displayed only three or four times a century. On these rare occasions, pilgrims from all over the world troop to Turin to witness the exposition.

However, Filipinos need not wait until the next official exposition in 2025, as they have the chance to view the replica of this artifact together with over 80 other exhibit items from the collection of Mr. Barrie Schwortz, the Official Documenting Photographer commissioned by King Umberto II of Savoy, the Shroud’s previous monarch-owner.

The Philippine Exhibition of the Shroud of Turin begins in Pampanga and will then be taken to SM Mall of Asia from Sept. 8 to Dec.9; SM City Davao from Jan. 18 to Feb.3, 2008; and SM City Cebu from April 4 to 27, 2008. Read the rest of this entry »
