Intramuros by Calesa

Friday, September 30th, 2005

I had a guest from the US last month. She’s French but studying law in the US. Let me call her Vi. She spent only a few days in Manila for official business. It was her first time to visit the Philippines. I lent a hand as she conducted her interviews here, and showed her [...]

Lola Abon’s Durian Candy

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Chances are if you ask a Davaeno what the best tasting durian candy is, they will tell you that it is Lola Abon’s. True enough when I went to her house (yes, it’s a small house in a narrow side street) I saw huge baskets with packs of candies (reminds me of Willy [...]

Oceana- Another Peaceful Alternative in Puerto Galera

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

When my nieces from Papua New Guinea came for an impromptu visit, I was tasked to locate a resort where we can hang around for 4 days. Because of the time constraint, most of the top resorts in Galera were fully booked and my agent managed to find a vacant cottage in Oceana Beach Resort.

We left Manila very early, as the boat of the resort was scheduled to pick us up at Leah Beach in Batangas at around 11am. The trip to Batangas was in itself tiring, but with the help and availability of an in-car entertainment system, all the children were preoccupied with the movies which ranged from cartoons to movies starred by Eddie Murphy.

Engkanto: Travel Oddities

Monday, September 26th, 2005

One of the exciting part of travelling is that sometimes you’d encounter odd people, places, things, or situations. Mine was during my recent trip this year to Mount Siniloan at Famy. I think it’s in the borderline of Quezon Province and Laguna.
The place is a regular camp site beside a river with several waterfalls [...]

The Road Trip

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

My longest road trip ever was the one I had way back in 1998. I was here in Manila still studying in college at the Ateneo. The sem break is up ahead so me and some of my friends planned a road trip over the vacation week.
The itenerary — Manila -> Naga City -> Samar [...]

Vigan, The Great Escape

Saturday, September 10th, 2005

I didn’t really have concrete plans of going anywhere for the Holiday weekend. I was thinking of going home to Guimaras but the 4 day-long weekend wasn’t enough and worth it. Plane tickets are skyrocketing and the timing is just not good; besides, I couldn’t get any plane reservations.

And there was I, hoping to get a good rest and stay home to catch up with cleaning my pad and do some reading or maybe play Battle Realms up to sawa. Then, my office phone rang and an old friend asked me if I wanted to go to Vigan for the Holy Week. Vigan, I ask? Well, yeah, I nodded.

Puerto Galera: Talipanan or White Beach?

Saturday, September 10th, 2005

I’ve been to Puerto Galera a lot of times. It’s one of those getaway spots you can easily visit even for just the week-end. A 3-hour drive by bus from Buendia to Batangas Pier costs about Php110.00 and a ferry trip of about 1 to 1.5 hours to either White Beach or Sabang will cost [...]

Alubihod Beach

Tuesday, September 6th, 2005

I grew up in a small town of Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. Every Sunday, our family would go to Alubihod beach that my grandfather inherited from his parents. Alubihod is just 4 kilometers away from town, so all five of us would take our family motorbike and spent the entire Sunday swimming or taking boats rides [...]
