An ordinance by the provincial government of Bohol aims to restrict the public viewing of captive tarsiers in the island. The restriction has recently been made to protect the population and natural habitat of tarsiers in Bohol.

The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is the only body that is sanctioned to do public viewing of the tarsiers in Bohol. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary, run by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation, Inc., is the only sanctuary with the area, facility, and expertise to handle the conservation and preservation of the Philippine Tarsier and thus was given the exemption.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources Administrative Order No. 38 included the Philippine Tarsier among the national protected wildlife species. The Philippine Tarsier is native to the island of Bohol.

Asian Spirit has recently re-branded itself as Zest Air. This move was made after a recent acquisition of major stock on the old Asia Spirit Airlines. Why Zest Air? Read on to learn about them.

According to the Zest Air website:

In 2008, a series of corporate activities gave birth to Zest Air. Firstly, on March 26, AMY Holdings Corporation (AHC) acquired 99.6 percent of Asian Spirit Inc., Seeing the opportunity for growth, the new owners felt that the only way to enhance its profitability was by infusing new capital, re-fleeting, altering management style and innovating marketing strategies. Seven months later Zest Airways orange and green colors flew the Philippine skies, making way for a bigger and better airline. With acquisition of seven new aircraft, Zest Air successfully flies to 13 Philippine destinations.

Zest Air is under new management now. The president and CEO of Zest Air is Mr. Alfredo M. Yao — more popularly known as Juice King of the Philippines for being also the Chairman of Zest-O Corporation. Now you know where the airline gets its new name.

According to recent news, wireless internet service is starting to spread among airlines in the United States. Delta and American Airlines have installed it on more than a dozen planes each, and several other carriers are planning to test it.

Although some business flyers are happy about the additional services, a flight attendants’ union has expressed growing apprehensions and concerns over the inevitable technology that terrorists could use their connection to plot or launch attacks. Not only that, there are concerns about how flight attendants will be able to monitor and handle the usage if lets say a customer fails to lower the volume of his earphones while watching YouTube, or if a customer watches porn in the net and the person seated beside him complains… And there is the inescapable fact that one of the last places on earth to get away from it all can now be turned into a mobile office. There are also the concern over fees since wifi on air is not free. On Delta, service is $9.95 for a flight of three hours or less, $12.95 for a longer flight.

I wonder how long it will take for our local carriers to offer wifi on air. Judging by the increasing number of laptop, smartphone toting travelers in the Philippines, I think this inevitable technology will be welcomed here. Cost might be another issue altogether, but for the sake of discussion, how much are you willing to pay to stay online even on air? Would you like to be “reachable” even while traveling? Do you think this would encourage more productivity for business travelers?

Starting today, January 7, 2009, Cebu Pacific Air will remove fuel and insurance surcharges for all domestic flight bookings. This is good news to all passengers looking to travel with CEB domestic flights.

Candice Iyog, CEB spokesman, said, “We are committed to offering the public the most affordable fares coupled with the newest planes. In fact, we have made air travel a viable option for those who would normally travel by bus or ferry. We will continue to give EveryJuan more reasons to fly as we expect to take delivery of six brand new aircraft in 2009.”

The removal of fuel and insurance surcharges will now allow passengers to easily compare airfare with the fares of buses and ferries.

The airline also cuts its fuel and insurance surcharge for select international routes. CEB’s Manila-Bangkok and Clark-Bangkok one-way surcharges are slashed from $80 to $50 and $80 to $60, respectively.

Moreover, CEB’s Manila-Osaka one-way surcharges are lowered from $105 to $100 and Manila-Hong Kong surcharges are reduced from $45 to $40 per way.
